This series consists of subject correspondence files. The records include letters received and copies of letters sent; forms; census records; certifications; abstracts; annual, quarterly, and monthly reports; circulars; bank statements; birth and death certificates; inventories; biographies; school calendars; and lists. The records provide information on all aspects of the administration and operation of the Red Lake Agency, including employees and personnel management; property, buildings, equipment, and supplies; finance, including management of individual Indian money accounts and annuity payments; education; Indian day schools on the Red Lake Indian Reservation; mission boarding schools; and off-reservation boarding schools, including Pipestone Indian School, Wahpeton Indian School, and Tomah Indian School. The records also provide information on sales of alcohol to Indians; livestock; health, Indian hospitals, and the Sac and Fox Sanatorium; food; timber sales; Indian land allotments; and Indian fairs and exhibitions. The correspondents include agency employees; merchants and vendors; school administrators; and individuals having business with the agency.

The Tomah Indian School was authorized as a nonreservation boarding school in 1891 and opened in 1893. The Tomah Indian School was given agency duties in 1911 for the Hocak (Winnebago) Indians of Wisconsin. Agency duties were transferred to the Grand Rapids Agency in 1916, but in 1927 that agency-level jurisdiction was consolidated with the Tomah School, which regained its agency status. Between 1932 and 1935, the Tomah School took over responsiblity for the Oneida, Stockbridge, and Munsee India...
